Hiking at Pu‘u Kukui and Honolua

The conservation easements at Pu‘u Kukui and Honolua are on private land. Hiking access is limited for safety reasons and to protect the native forest.

In Honolua valley, organized hikes are usually offered once a month.

You will learn about native plants and the Pu’u Kukui watershed while taking a wonderful hike with amazing views. This is a moderate hike with a total distance of three miles.

Bring proper hiking footwear, water, hat, sunscreen and joy in your heart.

High up on the mountain, there is a steep four mile boardwalk up to Pu‘u Kukui. This is one of the wettest places on earth and the boardwalk prevents damage to the native forest.

It is home to plants found nowhere else and access is extremely limited. People who make a significant contribution, through volunteering or donating, will be offered the chance to visit part of the boardwalk. The journey up to the start of the Pu‘u Kukui boardwalk is a one hour ATV ride on a rugged dirt road.

To avoid introducing anything, all gear and footwear must be washed, free of dirt, and then decontaminated using an alcohol spray. Because of Rapid 'Ōhi'a Death, no gear or footwear that has been used on Oahu or Hawaii Island is allowed.
